The foundation for a Safe & Sound home is the basement.
Heres a checklist that will help you tackle spring cleaning
from the bottom
up.
Have your water heater and HVAC units serviced and checked for carbon
monoxide levels.
If you havent checked for radon levels in your home lately,
now is the time. Your local health department should be able to direct
you to sources for inexpensive "do it yourself" test kits.
Make sure the fuse box is up high and that there is nothing nearby
for children to climb on to reach it.
Install a smoke detector and make sure you have a fire extinguisher
that is in good working order.
Check that there are no exposed electrical wires.
If you have sump pump in the basement, make sure it is disconnected
and covered. If there is access to your well in the basement, this
too should be adequately protected.
Open shelving units are often unstable. Make sure they are securely
mounted to the wall.
Items should be stored in containers whenever possible.
Check for hazardous items - paint thinner, cleaners, power and hand
tools, etc. Throw away all old and/or unmarked containers. . Place
what must be kept in a locked cabinet.
