If your home pre-dates the late 1970s, when lead paint
was banned from the market, be especially careful. When in doubt,
follow this procedure
Wipe an area of chipped paint and debris with a baby wipe--Fold it
inward and take it to a lab to be tested.
If lead is present, be sure to wear a HEPA filter mask at all times.
Whenever possible, avoid vacuuming. Instead, wipe or mop the area
with a solution of water and a high phosphate content detergent (i.e.
dishwasher detergent). Phosphates bind with the lead in water.
If you must use a vacuum, make sure that it is outfitted with a HEPA
filter.any other filter won't capture the particles
Be careful not to put hands to mouth.
Check shoes and clothes before leaving the area. Take care not to
track out particles to areas where children may come in contact
with lead dust.
Paint over all wood surfaces that have tested positive for lead
to seal it.
Lead paint is especially dangerous around windows where opening
and shutting is likely to cause flaking and chipping. Either have
windows professionally stripped and repainted, or replace the window
entirely.
Call a lead abatement professional for advice and/or safe removal
of lead in your home
If you feel that you or your children have been exposed, consult
your physician who may suggest a blood test.
